The sustainability vision of Basten Leijh

We only have one planet and we have to be careful with it. Early on, Basten Leijh realized that sustainability in a production chain starts at the source: the raw materials you select for making products. In his designs, Basten Leijh always looks at the origin and properties of raw materials (are they recycled, can they be used circularly) and can the raw materials be used to last a long time. The product designs that follow are mostly timeless, so they have long-term aesthetic appeal. Add to this the fact that the products produced are long-lasting in terms of quality and can be reused back in the chain when they reach the “end of lifecycle. Good for the world, good for the producer and good for the end user.

Philips MyCreation and Basten Leijh

De duurzame waarden van ontwerpstudio Bleijh en Phlips MyCreation, hebben de perfecte match gevormd voor het ontwerp van de ‘Cloak’ hanglamp.

Waar industrieel ontwerper Basten Leijh altijd kijkt naar de herkomst en eigenschappen van grondstoffen – eis: gerecycled en circulair inzetbaar – focust Philips MyCreation zich met haar speciale 3D-printtechniek op een duurzame productiemethode. Dat deed een lichtje branden bij de twee specialisten en leidde tot een samenwerking met een podiumwaardig resultaat.

De duurzame hanglamp is ontstaan door inspiratie vanuit de natuur en de mode: de gelaagdheid van bloemkelken en stoffen. De uitdaging voor Bleijh was om met behulp van de hi-tech 3D-printtechnologie een natuurlijk ogende lamp te creëren. De lijnen die bij deze printtechniek worden gebruikt, heeft de ontwerper omgezet in natuurlijke gelaagdheid.

Met alle ontwerpvrijheid is Basten erin geslaagd een lamp te ontwerpen die zich door de ronde vorm en verschillende lagen kan aanpassen binnen elk interieur, en een warme sfeer creëert door een bijzonder lichteffect.
